Having beat Dewsbury 10-0 away in their previous fixture, Rangers came up against a side that clearly set their stall out to defend. Getting numbers behind the ball was a strategy that worked well for the first 40 minutes as, although David Bell hit the post and Adam Gunby hit the bar, Rangers could not break down a resolute defence.
The deadlock was finally broken when Bell split the defence to send Craig Phelan clear and he finished well. Rangers spent virtually the entire second half camped in the visitors’ half but only had one goal to show for their efforts when a Ryan Whitaker effort was deflected and wrong footed the keeper. Kev Thimm was denied a late goal after a desperate lunge from a Dewsbury defender. Tom Lindley and Darren Bourke were solid at the heart of Rangers’ defence and restricted the visitors to one goal scoring opportunity.
Rangers need to step up their game for next week’s League Cup Semi-Final against Little Bull.

Missing 8 players from last week’s 6-1 win over Plough FC, Rangers were still able to put out a side capable of testing second placed Inns. The visitors deservedly led twice during a full blooded encounter and were only denied victory in 90 minutes by a dubious ball to hand free kick awarded with minutes on the clock. The resultant goal was arguably the best conversion of the game and set up extra time.
Lack of concentration and indecisive defending handed 2 goals, in quick succession, to the home side during the first period of extra time. Despite camping in their hosts half for the second period and having chances cleared off the line Rangers were only able to beat a keeper, in outstanding form, once and they crashed out.
Rangers goals came from Booker, Smith and Squires
Though disappointed the Rangers side could be proud of their efforts and with two 16 year olds coming off the bench to make their senior debuts there were positives for the coaches to take out of the game.

A resounding win has been on the cards for some time now from our reserve side. Though Plough scored first when the referee awarded a penalty for well….er not much, Rangers always looked to have too much for their visitors.
The converted penalty was probably Plough’s only effort to trouble the keeper and most of the action unfolded in the visitor’s half. A long range effort from Tuck levelled the scores before half-time with many other chances going begging.
Second half goals from McAlinden, Wyatt, Booker, Gunby and Ellis gave the full time score line a more realistic look.
It wasn’t a dirty match but there were plenty of injuries one to Rangers left back Si Morton could be the most serious and costly. Despite the home sides extensive squad they have now lost 4 defenders, with first team experience, potentially for the rest of the season. Today’s centre back pairing for the reserves was just the latest of a series of experiments aimed at replacing those who receive the first team call.

The scoreline does not flatter Rangers in what was an embarrassingly one sided game. Carl Kennedy in the Ranger’s goal was rarely called into action and Matthew Tuck gave a composed performance in the heart of Ranger’s defence.
Once Craig Johnson opened the scoring after 10 minutes the result was never in doubt. Adam Gunby notched 4, including a couple of superb individual efforts, Johnson got his second from a Paul Laurie cross and further goals were added by Craig Phelan, Darren Bourke, Dominic Laughton and the outstanding Tom Lindley.
This result enhanced Ranger’s goal difference and consolidated their position at the top of Division 2.

A heavy pitch restricted flowing football and it appeared to favour the home side as Rangers were unable to get into their stride. Despite this they dominated first half possession and deservedly edged in front through a well taken Olly Wyatt effort.
A very young Rangers backline were caught out when the ref failed to uphold a seemingly legitimate off side call and Horbury got back into a game that could have already been put beyond them if chances had been taken.
Level at half-time Rangers began the second on top and again created chances to take a lead but failed to capitalise. Once again a more experienced Horbury side took the lead and then began a dominant spell themselves resulting in a third goal and for the first time in the game Rangers began to look as though they might be beaten. A re-shuffle aimed at shoring up the mid-field and bringing in fresh legs led to Olly Wyatt getting his second of the game but despite a last ditch onslaught on the Horbury goal an equaliser didn’t come and the points were lost.
Mid-field pairing of Chapman and McAlinden worked themselves into the ground for the cause and were only thwarted by the muddy conditions despite finding themselves out numbered much of the time. New centre back pairing of Gill & O’Neil showed great promise despite their combined age being less than that of some of their opponents. Jonny Booker worked his socks off as normal but the goals are still not coming.
This was a day when Garforth’s considerable efforts were not rewarded but it was a more than credible performance against well organised, more experienced opponents and is further proof of better things to come.

The pre-match warm up told the Rangers team that they would not be able to play their fast flowing football on a pitch more suited to growing potatoes! A clash between the top 2 was always going to be tight and so it proved as both teams set their stall out not to lose this game.
Morley’s prolific scoring left winger was kept quiet throughout the game by Ranger’s right back, Carl Wrigglesworth but equally the Morley defence gave little space to Ranger’s strikers, Darren Bourke and Adam Gunby. Morley had the better of the early exchanges and took the lead after 10 minutes when their centre-forward headed home a pinpoint cross.
Rangers got stronger as the game progressed and equalised with an exquisite lob from Bourke. Honours even at half-time but Rangers came out stronger in the second half and took the lead with a Craig Johnson header after good work by Bourke. Rangers looked like securing all 3 points but the home side snatched an equaliser 3 minutes from time after a goalmouth scramble. In the last minute, Gunby was sent clear but, with only the keeper to beat, his shot was just wide of the post. This result keeps Rangers 6 points clear of Morley who have 2 games in hand so all still to play for.

When Chas Morton capped a fine display taunting the right side of Blue Light’s defence, with a late goal, the sense of relief from his team, management and supporters was immense. For 90 minutes Garforth almost camped in the opposition’s half and despite creating scoring opportunities, at will, they had no first half goals to show for their endeavours.
Once again disrupted by first team calls and injuries, it took time for Garforth to gel but after 15 minutes or so it seemed business as usual had been resumed. Unfortunately the strikers couldn’t avoid hitting the woodwork and many chances were squandered. Refusing to panic Garforth kept their shape for the most part and continued to heap pressure on the visitor’s defence in the second half but even a penalty didn’t produce a goal after a number of point blank saves from a courageous keeper in a frantic goalmouth scramble.
When it was beginning to look as though a point was all the home side would take from this game up popped Morton to shoot home and take the man of the match award.

After a sluggish first 15 minutes, Rangers opened the scoring after an excellent through ball from Craig Johnson found Adam Gunby who slotted past the oncoming keeper. Rangers extended their lead after the keeper parried a Craig Phelan effort and David Bell fired home from close range. Gunby was then fouled in the box and Bell converted the resultant penalty. Gunby got the 4th before half time and Rangers were now well and truly in the ascendancy.
The second half was one way traffic and substitute Dominic Laughton caused the visitor’s defence constant problems and notched a brace. Ryan Whittaker fired home with a well struck shot and a Wrenthorpe defender scored an own goal from a Bell corner. Bell then completed his hat trick after good work by Phelan.
This was Rangers’ 2nd biggest win of the season and, with key rivals not in action, they extended their lead at the top of Division 2 to 6 points.

Division Two leaders, Rangers, had their first taste of league action for 8 weeks with a tough challenge against second placed Little Bull who had the incentive of taking over pole position if they could achieve a win.
Garforth started well and soon had the visitors under pressure with Tom Lindley causing constant problems down the left flank. Rangers went close to scoring when both Lindley and Adam Gunby failed to convert with only the keeper to beat. The deadlock was broken after 20 minutes when an exquisite ball from Gunby unlocked the resolute Bull defence to release Lindley who coolly slotted past the keeper.
Rangers continued to dominate and Carl Kennedy in the Ranger’s goal was rarely troubled with Paul Peirson dominant in central defence. Despite their possession, Rangers did not make the points secure until the last minute when a David Bell through ball opened up the Bull defence to send Darren Bourke clear and he drove the ball past the visitor’s keeper.
With eight games to play, Rangers have opened up a 5 point gap over one of their main rivals and are in confident mood.

30/01/2010 W&DFAL div3
Prostar begin this game like they meant business and their height in the forwards troubled the Rangers defence.
Against the run of play, in the early stages, Steve Smith put the home side in front and it should have settled things. Scrappy play and poor defending from Rangers allowed their visitors back in to the game and they, perhaps deservedly, led 2-1 at H/T.
On their home turf Garforth know they have the edge on fitness over most sides in this division and their second half performances often undo teams who think they have the game won. Today was no exception as they tore into Prostar hitting them with 3 unanswered scores to win the game.
First second half effort was from Olly Wyatt, in his debut as a striker, to equalise. Dom Laughton then capitalised with pace and strength to give the home side a lead that was extended by Wyatt’s second of the match.
This was a tremendous effort from rangers missing 3 of their regulars and shows that with their strength in depth they can still have a say in what happens in division 3.

After a 6 week break, Rangers were back in action with a League Cup Quarter Final tie against Scissett. A poor pitch was never going to be conducive to flowing football but Rangers were quickly into their stride and their early work rate showed they had benefited from indoor training during the enforced break. Good pressure led to an own goal after 10 minutes and Rangers extended their lead midway through the first-half with a lob from Ryan Whitaker. The best goal of the game was scored by Craig Phelan after good approach play by Tom Lindley and the outstanding James Appleton and gave Rangers a 3-0 half-time lead.
In the second half, Rangers had the home side under constant pressure but numerous chances went begging including a missed penalty from Whitaker. The Scissett cente-back claimed his second own goal of the game when he headed home a Lindley corner to secure a semi-final place for Rangers.
Scissett scored a late consolation with a miscued cross which caught Carl Kennedy in the Rangers goal by surprise. Given the conditions, an excellent team performance by Rangers after a lengthy lay-off.

Rangers showed they are fast improving by pushing Premier Division side Gate FC all the way in this competitive cup tie.
Having weathered the early pressure from the home side Rangers began to get a bit more adventurous and a Booker shot that hit the post and a blatant penalty denied them were perhaps as close as either side came to breaking the deadlock in the first half.
The longer Rangers frustrated their hosts the more physical the home side became and numerous late challenges tested the ref's hold on the game. During a prolonged spell of home side pressure the ball found the Rangers net and this single goal decided a game that according to some amateur pundits was going to be a 16-0 breeze for the Premier division side.
No individual can be singled out for more praise than any other in a fantastic team effort and this performance should give Rangers second string even greater confidence in the second half of the season with the target being a promotion berth.
Any neutral observers could not be certain as to who the Premier Division side were.

12/12/09 W&DFAL Callaghan Cup
In what has become an annual event Rangers were drawn away to the league's most consistently successful side for the 3rd successive time in the challenge cup. Garforth's regular reality check was as comprehensive as the score suggests once the home side weathered the first 20 minutes of Garforth 's bright opening.
Though there is no doubt that Tree are a class act, Rangers made life difficult for themselves and gifted some of the goals that might have left the scoreline looking a little more respectable. If some players were left to reflect on their performances and manage to up their game as a consequence the apparent humiliation will be for the good in the long run. Those who don't put matters right may find that there are younger players with a greater appetite for the battle snapping at their heels.
It remains to be seen whether this result has any bearing on the outcome of this season as once more the old quote "we can now concentrate on the bread and butter of league football" is trotted out. It may be a fact that we were not going to win the Callaghan Cup, but it is time this side made progress in some cup competition.

12/12/09 W&DFAL Div 3
Rangers started brightly in this bottom of the table clash by getting the ball out wide to Thompson and Caine at the earliest opportunity in an attempt to make the most of a pitch that was more suited to mud wrestling than football.
The strategy paid dividends with two early goals from Thompson and Rangers continued to create chances add to the score. The experienced centre back pairing of Tuck and Ellis dealt with the occasional attack from Blue Light fairly comfortably until the referee gave a penalty against Tuck for pulling the Blue Light Striker backwards when it appeared to most people watching that it was more likely the striker backing in to the defender and lost his footing.
The protests were irrelevant because Dore pulled off a spectacular double save to maintain the 2 goal advantage at half time.
Within minutes Rangers started the second half just as they started the first with a sensational 25 yard left footed strike from Caine just inside the keepers right hand post. This goal seemed to totally deflate Blue Light and Rangers began really dominating in Centre midfield with Chapman and McAlinden pulling the strings. An own goal made it 4-0 before another debatable penalty was awarded to Blue Light when Ellis was adjudged to foul his opponent whilst sliding for the ball, and this time they made no mistake.
Blue Light must have harboured thoughts that they may just be back in the game but the superior fitness of Rangers was really beginning to tell. So much so that Smith almost connected with a lovely McAlinden cross by reliving his youth and attempting an overhead kick that was pure ballet. Another own goal and further goals for Chapman and Booker sealed a very good Rangers performance.
After a slow start to life in Division 3 of the Wakefield League, Rangers Reserves have now lost just 1 in the last 5 games scoring 22 goals and conceding just 9.

Rangers bounced back from last week's shock defeat, with a convincing win over lowly Featherstone. The home team dominated possession throughout the game and Carl Kennedy in the Ranger's goal didn't have a save of note to make in the entire match. Ryan Whittaker and Craig Johnson controlled the central midfield from the outset allowing Adam Gunby and Dave Bell to continually open up the visitor's defence.
Striker Craig Phelan bagged a hat-trick and was ably supported by Darren Bourke who was a constant thorn in the Featherstone side and who was unlucky only to have one goal to show for his hard work. Gunby scored 2 excellent individual goals and Johnson and Whitaker also notched. 18 year old Tom Lindley gave another outstanding performance at left back and youngsters, Fraser Escritt and Gareth Reed came on in the second half and more than held their own. These 3 young players were playing for the junior section of the club last season and it is very pleasing to see them making a strong contribution to the Club's 1st X1.

Rangers’ were well below par and never really got going in this game. Despite taking an early lead through Oliver Wyatt, they were under pressure for most of the first half and it was no surprise when the home side equalised albeit with a mis-hit cross. Moments earlier Adam Gunby had a perfectly good goal disallowed for offside which the referee adjudged from 40 yards away which would have put Rangers 2-0 up and it could have been a different story.
Alas, it was not to be. Shortly before half time, Ranger’s captain Craig Johnson was harshly dismissed for trying to prevent the Village striker raining blows down on Oliver Wyatt. With both sides down to 10 men, the game deteriorated in the second half into a scrappy affair with neither side really deserving to win. Fifteen minutes from time, a defensive lapse proved costly and the home side took all 3 points inflicting a second league defeat of the season on Rangers. Still top of the league but Rangers will have to perform a lot better than this if it is to be another Championship winning season.

The visitors took an early lead and were allowed to extend it before the home side began to play and at half-time the scores were level following strikes from Darren Bourke. A petty ref heavily reliant on cards to control the game dismissed a Horbury player before half-time and cationed several during the game in what was not a particurly dirty encounter.
The second half was a bit of a procession as a resurgent home, having hauled themselves back into the game used the slope to their advantage and created many scoring chances with Jonny Booker(2) and Barry McAlinden adding to Daz Bourke's haul of 5 goals in total.

The first local derby between these sides proved to be a tense full-blooded encounter. The heavy pitch was never going to be condusive to flowing football and in the first half the direct style of WMC was much more suited to the conditions. WMC deservedly took the lead but Rangers continued to strike on the break and levelled before half-time with an excellent finish from Craig Phelan.
After the break, Rangers started to come into the game more but WMC went ahead with their first major attack with a superb volley. Rangers continued to increase the pressure and were rewarded with a superb finish from Adam Gunby who mesmerised the WMC defence before slotting home. A few minutes later, Danny Roberts released Phelan who fired past the oncoming keeper. The outstanding Gunby made the points secure with another exquisite finish. Rangers created chances through out this game without converting enough to reflect their superiority in the scoreline.
Horbury's keeper kept them in the game time and again in an impressive display but was beaten twice in the first half after his side had taken a 1-0 lead.
In the second half Rangers were guilty of chasing a game they were actually winning and though not caught on the break sloppy defensive play led to them conceding numerous corners and it was only a matter of time until the visitors capitalised on one of them to grab a share of the points.
Despite feeling as though 2 points had slipped away this was a third game unbeaten for a strong Rangers reserve side and keeps them on track for a move up the table.

Despite dominating possession, Garforth never really got into their stride and made hard work of beating opponents who, to their credit, kept battling until the end.
Rangers opened their account after 10 minutes with a well placed header from Adam Gunby after good work by Craig Johnson and Tom Lindley. 5 minutes later, Lindley pounced on a miscued clearance and headed over the stranded keeper. Rangers should have pressed on and added to their score but failed to convert in the remaining 30 minutes of the half.
The pattern continued into the second half but Rangers were given a shock when the visitors pulled one back with a rare forage forward. Garforth played some neat football but struggled to trouble the visiting keeper until a Dave Bell chip found Ryan Whitaker who controlled the ball with his chest and struck an excellent first time effort into the back of the net. Gunby notched his second late in the game to secure the points and keep Rangers in pole position.

31/10/09 W&DFA League Cup Round 1
Faced with a home tie against the 2nd division leaders, Rangers reserves went into this game with nothing to lose and plenty of confidence.
Gareth Reed was persuaded to play in goal due to the unavailability of a specialist keeper, however with the welcome additions of Gill, Helliwell, Chapman & Morton, this line up looked to be the strongest that Rangers reserves had put out all season.
From the very first whistle playing up a slight slope and into the wind, Rangers gave Two Brewers no time to settle and were able to create pressure with good ball retention.
Gill and Tuck looked comfortable at the back for Rangers and it seemed only a matter of time before Rangers went a goal up with Booker, Smith, Helliwell and the centre midfield pairing of Chapman and Wyatt causing problems. However with 10 minutes to half time, the referee spotted an infringement that few others saw and awarded Two Brewers a free kick on the edge of the Rangers 18 yard box. It was despatched accordingly into the top corner like a rocket, which Keeper Reed had no chance.
Although 1-0 down at half time and with every right to feel sorry for themselves, Rangers came out with added belief that this game was there to be won.
Rangers again started brightly with numerous shots, but Two Brewers were now looking dangerous on the counter-attack. Helliwell scored from a well worked move to equal the scores and when Farrel came on to score a screamer with 20 mins to go, it looked like Rangers would be the team to go through to the next round.
A speculative long range effort from a Two Brewers player deflected of Tuck and sent Reed the wrong way to level the scores again, but Rangers weren’t fazed. A long ball sent Helliwell through on goal and he calmly lobbed the advancing Keeper to seal the win.
This was a fabulous display from a young side that is improving with every game.

Rangers first X1 never really got into top gear but still managed a comforable victory over a hard working Wrenthorpe side. After a couple of close efforts, including a Paul Laurie shot hitting the post, Rangers went ahead after 35 minutes with a well struck Dave Bell effort from the edge of the box. Five minutes later, Adam Gunby released Darren Bourke who outpaced his marker and drilled in a low cross which was fired home by Craig Johnson.
In the second half, despite having most of the possession, Rangers only added to their tally through an own goal after excellent work by Gunby. New keeper, Carl Kennedy, looked very confident in the Garforth call and, although rarely called upon, pulled off a superb save in the last minute to keep a clean sheet on his debut. Another 3 points on the board but Rangers will need to step up their game for the visit of unbeaten Morley next week.

After 5 games without registering a win Rangers reserves found themselves looking at a six pointer with Horbury to get off the bottom of division 3.
For the first time this season Garforth had the relative luxury of a specialist keeper and perhaps it was no coincidence that they looked more confident at the back, the addition of Matthew Tuck giving much needed pace in the backline compounded the effect and also meant improved distribution from the back.
Early exchanges didn't produce any goals but when Olly Wyatt chipped the Horbury keeper to open the scoring Rangers suddenly looked a more confident outfit. Two further first half goals from Booker gave the home side a 3-1 advantage and a warning not to regard it as a cushion but to look to get the next goal.
With the Manager's warning ringing in their ears Garforth set about the task of getting the next goal with some conviction and probably played their best football of the game without converting numerous chances. A second for Horbury threatened to ensure the game went all the way but Gareth Reed had other ideas and lobbed the keeper to claim the match winner.
The much needed win was soured by a serious injury to centre back Whittaker who will almost certainly miss the rest of 2009's action after suffering a dislocated knee and broken wrist in an innoccuous looking fall during a game of few bad tackles.

A first half dominated by chances at goal for the home side ended frustratingly for them with a 2-1 scoreline failing to reflect their dominance.
In the second half, with confidence high it was a markedly different story as Garforth's flowing football had their visitors chasing shadows and the seemingly one way traffic produced 10 goals without reply.
Rangers' total equalled the league's highest score of the season to date and but for wayward first half finishing could have been much higher.

Inuries, suspensions and Super League Grand Final were the reasons for several regulars missing the action and the disruption it casued was all too evident in the performance despite the management feeling that the side was good enough to get something out of the game.

03/10/09 WRCFA Challege Trophy R2
Both teams attempted to play football, despite difficult windy conditions. Fortunately the wind blew across the pitch and did not favour either side.
The homes side faced opposition from 4 levels above them and it's a credit to them that despite fielding 6 players that are not first team regulars it was difficult to tell who was the West Riding County Amateur League Div One team.
Bronte scored first after a push by Peirson gave away a soft free kick and when Tuck equalised for the home side a H/T 1-1 score line reflected the way the half had gone.
In the second half it was all Garforth and despite having 7 shots at goal in the game to Bronte's 3 it was the visitor's who progressed having taken their chances. Garforth were left to lament the quality of their finishing and knowing they had outplayed the opposition and lost found it hard to understand the pride felt by their management team.

Rangers first team gave a below par performance but comfortably maintained their 100% league record. After a slow start, Rangers went ahead through Craig Phelan with an accomplished finish. Dom Laughton followed up with 2 opportunistic goals and Dave Bell scored direct from a corner, giving the visitors a 4-0 half time lead.
In the second half, Rangers should have extended their lead by far more than 2 goals given the amount of possession they had but all credit to the Featherstone keeper who pulled off a series of excellent saves. Laughton completed his hat-trick but the goal of the game was scored by Craig Phelan after the best move of the match involving some superb approach play by Bell, Bourke and Wrigglesworth. Chris Broome in the Rangers goal only had one save to make so it was disappointing when a lapse in concentration allowed the home side to pull one back in the last five minutes.

Starting slowly has become an unwanted habit with the reserves. Despite enjoying similar possession to the visitors the defence made basic errors and failed miserably to cope with a ‘one man up front’ long ball approach.
Having conceded the same goal three times without apparently sussing out why, Rangers found themselves 3-0 down at the break and expressed a common sense of disbelief at their plight. The consensus was that they are better than their first half performance suggested and they set about putting that right.
A different, better balanced, side emerged though only one personnel change was mad. With Jake Thompson switched to the right and Chas Morton adding width on the left the home side suddenly seemed to find the space on a large pitch that their visitors sought to deny them with their more compact approach.
Having got behind the Snydale defence once or twice the hoped for early goal came courtesy of a fierce shot from Booker. It was now game on and Garforth began to believe they could turn the game around.
Raids down both wings expanded the attack and kept the visitors penned in their own half for long periods and it was no surprise that Booker notched his second goal of the game.
Sustained pressure on the visitor’s goal created enough chances to win several matches and the real surprise was that they did not manage to overhaul their opponents before time ran out.
For the second meeting in a row, Rangers had outplayed a Snydale side and created enough chances to bury them but come away with nothing. An answer has to be found to combating the more basic approach of some teams in this league.

19/09/09 BA Challenge Cup Rnd 1
Rangers began brightly and though they found themselves closed down early by a more than competent West Yorkshire League side they went in front with a suberbly taken lob over the keeper by Dom Laughton.
The home side then began to allow their visitors space and it was no real surprise when Saints equalised.
Injuries to potential match winners Bell and Phelan prevented the home side from making any tactical changes and though they never gave up completely when substitute Sutton was carried off and departed for hospital the game was won by the visitors.
There was no apparent gulf in class and with a little more luck on the day Rangers would have expected to give their visitors from a higher league a tougher challenge.

Rangers were quickly into their stride and their quick passing game put the home side under early pressure which paid dividends as Dom Laughton notched twice in the opening 15 minutes. Rangers continued to dominate and an own goal put them further ahead before half-time after good work by Carl Wrigglesworth and Craig Phelan. Rangers created a number of chances in the second half but only managed one further goal with an unstoppable strike from Darren Bourke. Craig Johnson and Adam Gunby dominated the central midfield and the defence of Laurie, Pierson, Wrigglesworth and Appleton were extremely well organised as a unit which meant keeper, Dom Elmeih, didn't have a save of any note to make.

Hopetown FC : 8
12/09/09 W&DFA League Div 3
Very difficult day for the 2nd's, some new faces returning from holiday were expected to strengthen the side after last week's narrow defeat. The fact that they were still outclassed is a measure of the strength in all departments of the Hopetown side.
The visitors will now be clear favourites for the Div 3 title after successive big wins and the battle for the runners up slot is on.
Early play was dominated by Hopetown but Garforth did show glimpses of what they are capable of. Chance were created at both ends but Hopetown were first to take advantage and having breached the home sides defence they quickly established an unbeatable lead going into the break 4-0 up.
Rangers only hope that the game was not lost was to score first after the break. Unfortunately despite this looking possible Hopetown increased their lead and goals from Smith and Bishop were nothing more than consolation as Garforth had no answers to the power of the visitors.
No excuses from a well beaten side that was left to reflect on their strength of character and look to put this result behind them.

Village FC : 1
05/09/09 W&DFA League Div 2
Rangers first team got their league campaign off to a flying start with a convinci ng 6-1 win over Village FC. Dominic Laughton, making his debut, converted a first-half hat-trick and Darrren Bourke added another giving the home side a convincing 4-1 half-time lead. In the second half, Rangers were virtually camped in the visitors's half and 2 further goals from Craig Phelan and Adam Gunby, were scant reward for such domination. All credit to the Village team for some resolute defending.
Man of the match was Craig Phelan.
Plough FC : 2
Garforth Rangers AFC : 1
05/09/09 W&DFA League Div 3
A slightly disappointing result but encouraging performance from a young side playing their first league game together. A strong wind caused first half problems and Garforth found themselves pinned into their own half for long periods. Plough forced several corners and all caused problems for the visitor's defence. It was no real surprise when a goal came from a corner to give the home side a lead.
Lack of urgency from the Garforth side in clearing their lines looked likely to cost them further and a second goal, though taken very well was a disappointing one to concede and proved to be the winning goal. H/T 2:0.
In the second half it was all Garforth, now with the wind behind them they had the lion’s share of possession and when Jonny Booker calmly slotted a through ball past the advancing keeper it looked as though they would get some reward for their efforts.
With no options to change players only positional changes were possible and despite juggling their resources and formation to keep the opposition busy a second goal did not come.
A good game, well refereed if a little fussy on throw ins. Could have got out of hand at one point as some careless late challenges crept in but nipped in the bud by the ref and the game continued to flow.
Team : Reed, Escritt, Lindley, Whittaker, Laughton, Caine, McAlinden, Wyatt, Veigas, Booker, Squire.
