Stanley United       : 0

 Garforth Rangers : 3

WYAFL Div2, 28/08/2010

Rangers secured their first away points of the season with what, in the end, proved to be a convincing victory over Stanley. On a blustery day, Rangers found themselves playing into the wind in the first half and had to work extremely hard to counteract the long ball played over the back four. The defence of Paul Laurie, Paul Peirson, Carl Wrigglesworth and Tom Lindley functioned well as a unit and they were ably supported by the excellent Shaun O’Neill in the Rangers goal. Rangers played the more controlled football and should have taken the lead when both Craig Phelan and Oliver Wyatt went close.

The first half ended goalless but two minutes after the restart, Phelan broke away and finished in style. Rangers constantly sprung the offside trap and extended the lead when Wyatt powered a shot which the Stanley keeper could only parry into the net. Rangers created further chances without success before Fraser Escritt superbly headed home a Laurie cross ten minutes from time. Rangers remain in 4th place, one point behind the leaders.

Man of the match: Shaun O’Neill

Team: O’Neill, Laurie, Peirson, Wrigglesworth, Lindley, Chapman, Whitaker, Johnson (Capt), Phelan, Bell, Wyatt. Subs: Escritt, Sharp, Reed

Garforth Rangers : 2

Great Preston        : 1

WYAFL Div2, 21/08/2010

Rangers started brightly and dominated the early exchanges with Craig Johnson and Ryan Whitaker controlling the central midfield. The visitors were opened up a number of times particularly down the left hand side and this was the source of the first goal. A Dave Bell through ball sent Johnson clear and he squared the ball to Dom Jones who wrong footed the last defender and slotted home. Rangers continued to press and extended their lead when a 40 yard through ball from Paul Peirson sent Bell clear and he rounded the keeper before poking the ball into the empty net.

In the second half, Rangers should have pressed home their advantage but injuries to key players early on necessitated changes and Preston finished the game stronger but were let down by poor finishing, enabling Rangers to hold on to maintain their 100% home record. Man of the match: Adam Gunby

Team: O’Neill, Laurie, Peirson, Wrigglesworth, Appleton, Whitaker, Johnson (Capt), Jones, Gunby, Bell, Atkinson Subs: Lindley, Tuck

Barwick FC              : 5

Garforth Rangers : 3

WYAFL Div2, 18/08/2010

Rangers failed to carry their excellent efforts from Saturday into this midweek local derby and gave a lack lustre performance. After falling behind to an early goal, Rangers equalised when Liam Atkinson headed home a Craig Phelan cross. The home side regained the lead but some brilliant individual skill from Adam Gunby culminating in a chip over the keeper saw Rangers draw level. They took the lead just before half-time when a Dave Bell cross was deflected into the roof of the net by one of the Barwick defenders. The second half saw Barwick up their game and their greater desire coupled with some poor refereeing decisions, including the denial of a blatant penalty when Craig Johnson was pushed over in the box, resulted in them scoring three well taken goals to which Rangers had no reply.

Man of the match: Ryan Whitaker

Team: O’Neill, Laurie, Peirson, Wrigglesworth, Appleton, Whitaker (Capt), Jones, Phelan, Gunby, Bell, Atkinson Subs: Johnson, Lindley, Tuck

Garforth Rangers : 6

Howden Clough      : 0

WYAFL Div2, 14/08/2010

Rangers’ first challenge since being accepted into the West Yorkshire League Divison 2 involved a home game against Howden Clough, newly relegated from Division1.

Rangers started brightly and should have been ahead inside the first 3 minutes with Craig Phelan, Craig Johnson and Dave Bell all going close. Despite continued domination throughout the first half culminating in 9 attempts on goal, the home side could not find the breakthrough and were nearly punished just prior to half-time when the visitors twice sprung the offside trap but failed to convert past the uncompromising Shaun O’Neill in the Rangers goal.

Rangers continued to dominate in the second half and finally took the lead when Adam Gunby found Ryan Whitaker who struck the ball past the motionless Howden Clough keeper. Craig Phelan, who caused the visitors defence problems all afternoon, quickly added a brace and when Dave Bell added a fourth after a defence splitting pass from Dom Jones, the points were in the bag. Substitute Liam Atkinson also added a brace and his second, a curling shot into the top corner, was the goal of the game. Rangers defence of Paul Laurie, Paul Peirson, Carl Wrigglesworth, James Appleton/ Tom Lindley (one half each) worked well as a unit and it was pleasing to keep a clean sheet on the team’s debut at this higher level. With tough local derbies to come in the forthcoming week against Barwick and Great Preston, this was an excellent start to life in the WYL for

Rangers. Man of the match: Craig Phelan

Team: O’Neill, Laurie, Peirson, Wrigglesworth, Appleton, Whitaker, Johnson (Capt), Jones, Phelan, Gunby, Bell, Subs: Lindley, Tuck, Atkinson, Morton

Garforth Rangers AFC X1 : 1

Tadcaster Albion FC X1      : 4

Barkston Ash, Prostar Cup

Rangers first competitive match of the new term saw them drawn against NECL Premier division opposition in the form of Tadcaster Albion. In their previous 2 seasons in this competition Rangers were eliminated by the eventual winners, though this competition is unlikely to figure highly in their list of priorities if they choose to I am sure Taddy could keep that run going.

Rangers fielded a strong side and it certainly seemed as if their visitors did the same. Frustrated by their lack of quality possession the home side found themselves on the back foot for the entire first half. Having discovered that they were not going to dictate the game as they have become used to doing some untidy positional play led to their defence being over run and Tadcaster took the lead.

Having conceded it didn't look like the end of the world as the home side began to get back into the game and though they weren't threatening the visitors goal too often they began to increase their share of possession. Just when it looked as though they would survive at 1-0 until the interval, lack of concentration led to them conceding 2 quick goals and the game was lost.

In the second half Rangers looked more like themselves and they began to take the game to their visitors, after managing to retain better quality possession of the ball. A more even half saw Paul Pierson pull a goal back for the hosts before the visitors again benefitted from sloppy defensive play as concentration dipped on the stroke of time.

This was a good work out for the side against quality opposition and though the result was disappointing it was far from embarrassing, however, it was a warning that endeavour alone is not sufficient to match sides at this level.
