Barkston Ash FA Challenge Cup 1st Round
You only had to take a quick look at the small bumpy Great Preston pitch to figure out that Garforth Rangers wouldn’t be given the space to play their usual passing game. As expected Great Preston started full of energy in this local derby, and settled the quicker of the two teams as Rangers played into a swirling wind.
A long counter-attacking ball found a Great Preston Striker behind the Rangers defence and subsequently went to ground quite easily for an early penalty to the home side. Keeper Tom Stogdale was sent the wrong way only for the referee to request it be re-taken for encroaching. Stogdale guessed the right way this time and pulled off a great save. Great Preston looked dangerous on the counter-attack but didn’t really have any shots on target. Rangers however were now starting to dominate and Olly Wyatt hit a right footed curler and then a left footed thunderbolt that produced two stunning saves from the Great Preston keeper to keep the half time score at 0-0.
The second half produced a physical battle with neither team really dominating although Great Preston looked the likelier team to snatch a goal. Leading goalscorer Jonny Booker was introduced on the 60 minute mark and suddenly the game changed. A Craig Phelan shot was parried across the face of goal and Booker was there to head home only 5 minutes after coming on. Booker then had another couple of chances to score but was denied by some great goalkeeping and the goal post.. David Bell hit the post with a right footed volley before skipper James Appleton headed home Rangers second goal.
In the closing minutes Great Preston launched a barrage of long balls into the Rangers box, but a back four of Chris Broome, Paul Peirson, Andrew Ellis and Carl Wrigglesworth put their bodies on the line to ensure a clean sheet and place in the next round against South Milford.

Stanley United FC : 1
03/09/2011 WYAFL Div 2
Possibly having watched England's rugby team earlier, Rangers took at least 2/3rds of this game to find any rhythm. Stanley enjoyed superior quality possession and deserved their first half lead. The home side manager left his side in no doubt that he expected more from their second half performance and though missing 3 key players he had a strong bench from which to reinvigorate the side should things not improve.
Despite allowing Stanley a brief good spell, Rangers began winding up the tempo as it became clear that one or two of the visitor's more experienced players were already feeling the pace. The threat from the forwards in particular seemed to have faded somewhat and soon Garforth established dominance over most departments and the quality of ball for the forwards was improved above the first half's futile 'lob it over the top' approach. Pace in the forwards is not a problem for Garforth but providing them with the ball had appeared to be, for much of this game, until Phelan took matters into his own and charged through the visitors back line to equalize.
Once on terms Rangers looked as though they could do more damage and you could sense the visitor's realisation of that and belief drained out of them as two further pacey teenagers were introduced to ramp up the tempo still further. An injury to Matty Ellis, signalled his replacement by Jack Stoker in centre mid-field and he made an immediate impact with strong runs through the middle.
The introduction of Tom Hinchcliffe wide on the left gave the visitors even more pace to be concerned over and created space for Jonny Booker and Matty Marshall to exploit. Booker capitalised on the greater freedom and put his team into a deserved lead that they, not only held on to, but always looked capable of improving. It's a measure of the progress being made that Rangers' players were not too happy with this performance, they were however able to console themselves with victory over the 2nd placed side, at start of play, and swapping places in the table with their high flying opponents.
It was a great show of determination from a side starting to believe in their credentials and gaining strength from the improved squad now strong in quality and not just in numbers.

Yorkshire Amateurs started the game at a frenetic pace and continued to close down the Garforth Rangers players for the first 25 minutes giving very little time on the ball. one of the long balls played by Yorkshire Amateurs found their strikerthrough on goal when he was obviously 5 yards offside only for Tom Stogdale to pull off a great block. That seemed to be the only threat that Yorkshire Amateurs posed in the first half as their fitness started to fade. In fact, Garforth Rangers started to pass the ball better and were unlucky not to go ahead when Oliver Wyatt hit a great strike that hit the inside of the post and came back out. Matthew Marshall then made a great run down the right wing and drilled a ball across the Yorkshire Amateur box. David Bell had gambled at the far post and slotted the ball in for a 1-0 Garforth Rangers lead at half time.
The 2nd half was a continuation of the end of the first, with Rangers controlling the ball and opening the Yorkshire Amateur defence at will. A Matthew Marshall rocket shot hit the crossbar, as Garforth pushed to kill the game off. The Yorkshire Amateur Goalkeeper pulled off 2 unbelievable one-on-one saves from Jonnny Booker, and then a fiercely driven shot from Dom Laughton. Oliver Wyatt also put a free header from a corner just wide. With 10 minutes to go Yorkshire Amateurs were relying on the counter-attack to salvage something, but apart from a free kick 25 yards out and a corner, that was as close as they got to salvaging anything from the game.
A tremendous Man of the Match performance from Centre Back Andrew Ellis, and captain James Appleton ensured that Garforth Rangers kept a clean sheet and got the 3 points.

Garforth arrived at Barwick expecting a close encounter with their near neighbours and that was always going to be the case.
The Chapel Lane pitch is not suited to teams wanting to play football and Rangers struggled to impose their passing game on the hosts. When Rangers did find space they looked as though they could unlock Barwick’s defence and this proved the case when Booker ran on to well weighted through ball to finish superbly, leaving Barwick half-heartedly appealing for off-side.
H/T 0:1
The visitors looked comfortable, after appearing to have weathered the expected first 10 minutes storm after H/T until, they conceded a direct free kick on the edge of the area and then took too long to organise a wall allowing the kick to be taken quickly, keeper Stogdale was left stranded as the ball was placed in the right hand corner.
Barwick then enjoyed perhaps their best spell of the game as they looked to forge ahead but a melee on the touchline with players from both sides attempting to get the ball out from under their feet resulted in a red card for Garforth’s Tuck.
Down to 10 men Garforth introduced Matty Ellis for Bell and then Thompson for Marshall before settling down and looking to escape with at least a draw for their efforts. Left back Lindley, though, had not read the same script and raced forward stabbing a long shot in off the far post to claim the win with barely a kick left in the game.
It was a last gasp winner which was fully deserved by Garforth as their more adventurous play brought it’s just rewards.

A first half, debut open age, hat trick from Matty Marashall was sufficient to give the home side a 3-0 half time lead that set them on the way to a second win in 4 days. Though the visitors got a goal back in the second half a late brace from Booker ensured the full-time scoreline truly reflected Garforth's superiority.

Both sides started brightly, looking for a first win of the season, but Rangers soon took the upper hand and began to dominate possession. A young, but strong, centre mid-field partnership of Ellis.M & Wyatt commanded the middle of the park and allowed Phelan and Bell to get forward in support of their very mobile front pairing of Booker and Marshall.
Quick footed interplay often wrong footed the visitors but when longer balls were employed to turn Preston’s defence the home side really looked in control. First Booker (17mins) and then Marshall (20mins) were able to out pace their makers and convert to give the side a healthy lead. When Booker notched his second (42mins) the game looked all but won.
H/T 3-0.
After a half-time rest Preston had their best spell of the game and threatened to trouble the scorers but their hosts backline of Wrigglesworth, Pierson, Appleton & Lindley dug deep and weathered the brief storm before re-establishing control.
A solitary second half goal for Bell (77mins) seemed a relatively poor reward for their efforts as chances were squandered when, man of the match, Phelan, Booker and Marshall seemed able to break through the visitors defence at will. Substitutes Ellis.A (60mins), Tuck (76mins) & Wiltshire (80mins) slotted in seamlessly and ensured the 3 points were banked.

Barkston Ash 'Prostar Cup' Rnd 2 : 1/08/2011
This was a good tempo pre-season workout for both sides. Rangers fielded several young players making their first team debut and they were in no way over awed, taking the game to more experienced opponents for much of the match.
Half-time produced an unexpected 0-0 scoreline given a number of scoring opportunities to both sides and Rangers were made to regret not taking their chances as Innter took two second half chances to snatch a victory.
Good luck to Innter for the next round.
