Under 15A Boys season 2011/2012
This season the Under 15A squad are again fielding a squad of players available for the Garforth Junior Football League and the Saturday Selby League. This will enable all players to play football each and every weekend. Last season saw the Saturday side play with a lot of heart and desire and for this coming season will ply their trade in the second tier. The Sunday side will this season compete in division 3 of the Garforth League and with new players coming in expectations are high.
Neal Dent continues in his role of Team Manager, with help from Coaches, Jay Dickson, Dave Farmery-Hague and Tony Firth . Last season also saw the introduction of 2 former Rangers players, Matt Shaw and Rob Maher, and with their invaluble input into coaching sessions we got the very best out of the squad enabling us to gain promotion and win the inaugural 3rd/4th division cup.
Here’s looking forward to an exciting new season, hoping it will be played in the same spirit as last season and wishing all teams involved the very best.

Garforth Rangers Blue 2 – Gipton 1
09/10/2011
This game would prove to be a good yard stick on how we are developing as a team, Gipton are a strong direct side and it would take a top performance by us to secure passage into the next round. Our form is currently great, and such is the strength of the squad we have many players who can hurt sides. Today Liam Dent and Paddy’s moments of class is what separated a closely fought game. It started at a ‘hundred miles an hour’ and continued much the same for the rest of the match. Ash had a very busy day today and put in a “Man of the Match” performance to snuff out nearly all open play attacks; sometimes at a cost of a few corners. It was from a corner where we conceded what can only be described as a weak goal, but there is now a sense of belief in the side that comes from an unbeaten run such us ours. It was 27 Mins into the match when we struck back, Liam Dent received the ball, turned and just went straight at their defence; he ghosted past 3 players, and was one on one with their keeper in a blink of an eye. He attempted to lob the keeper who just got a hand to it which slightly skewed the goal bound shot, but Alistair was on hand to finish and we back on level terms. It was a real end to end battle for the rest of the match, but with only 5 mins remaining Liam Dent pounced again and this time cleanly lifted it over the keeper to take Rangers into the lead. Gipton then threw everyone forward, and in the dying seconds Paddy produced yet another top quality save for the weekend; a fantastic reactionary leap to his upper right, pushing the ball around the post. A few seconds later the ref blew for us to progress into the next round, continuing our phenomenal run of results in cup competitions.
Another great cup result, well done lads.

Garforth Rangers Blue 8 – Cliffe 2
08/10/2011
After last week’s disappointing result against Barlby we were looking for a positive response from the players. Though with the introduction of new players Kieran Spedding and Tom Maher, and playing with an unfamiliar formation we were aware that it may take time for the team to settle, and this proved to be the case and for most of the first half as we struggled to get our game going. Still Kieran marked his debut with a goal, a deflected shot that left the keeper no chance. From then on though the first half didn’t really go our way, with the defence and midfield not playing to the standard we were becoming accustomed to. Cliffe broke and scored, and then shortly after broke again, and it took a fantastic save by Paddy to deny Cliffe, somehow lifting it over the bar as their striker half volleyed a knee high shot to his right. It wasn’t long after Cliffe did score, but we did reply quickly after tremendous work by Tom Maher, his pace showed he will cause most defence’s problems. In this case he was fouled in the penalty box and Kallum scored the resulting penalty. Towards the end of the half we decided to make changes and brought on Liam H and Cameron for Kieran and Luke respectively, then Kallum was replaced with Jack a few mins later as Kallum got a dead leg.
Second half had got on the way after some stern talking to by Jay, who explained to the defence in no uncertain terms what he expects from them. We also now had a bit more creativity in midfield and with the defence looking very robust it gave us a platform to build from. Within the first few mins Andy Wort had scored a good brace, two great assists from Jack and Cameron. Shortly after Liam H scored after great turn, shimmy and pass by Jack to Matty, whose power and speed caused their defender to put in a clumsy challenge, the ball spilled for Liam H to put away. Some great runs by our attack were earning some corners and Jack put in some great ones, one coming off crossbar where Michael was on hand to nod in. It wasn’t long after our other debutant scored after great work again by Matty down the wing. Tom was in a great position to receive the ball and slotted it home with his left. Still the game wasn’t over yet, and Rob got his name on the score sheet after a big scramble in the box, which he enjoyed thoroughly. We should have scored more goals, one being where Jack seemed more intent in taking out any low flying aircraft than worrying their keeper, still eight goals isn’t bad.
All the defence in the second half really didn’t put a foot wrong and should be commended on how they all turned it round in the match; this gave us the platform to dominate the way we did in the second half.
Well done lads, a great response second half !

Garforth Rangers Blue 3 – Rothwell Juniors White 0
02/10/2011
After losing to today’s opposition on the opening day of the season this early return fixture gave Rangers an opportunity to make amends, which they took with a commanding first half performance. 3 goals in the opening 25 minutes put the game out of Rothwell’s reach and though the second half was a much even contest they never really tested Paddy in goal leaving him to walk away with his first clean sheet of the season.
Jack got the ball rolling after first hitting the post he mesmerised their right back before delivering a pin point cross for Liam H to fire home. 5 minutes later Liam D got behind their defence to earn a corner, which Alastair delivered right on top of the keeper, who could only parry the ball towards the goal where Kallum was on hand to head home. Liam H then got on the end of a Rob cross after Jack forced the keeper to fumble the ball and he calmly slotted home.
The remainder of the first half and much of the second was more of a battle with Rob, Brad, Ash, Eliot and Callum defending with grit and determination to thwart any threat Rothwell could muster. The midfield 5 worked hard for the team with Joe and Adam putting in excellent midfield displays.
A brilliant team effort.

Garforth Rangers Blue 9 – Gildersome Spurs 2
25/09/2011
We felt this match may have had an extra edge due to last season’s meeting in the cup, even though we won the previous encounter we were more confident this time round as our squad is stronger. Still, it proved to be a hectic start to the match and the first 10mins seemed to be more about our team finding its feet and confidence. As time progressed we were starting to become more dominant, but the first goal really did all the damage; and the nature of it I think knocked the belief out of Gildersome. A great ball across the pitch by Liam Dent onto Alistair’s run who took it at full pace, he then bombed down the wing played in a low hard cross which got past their first defender, Jack read this well and timed his diving poaching shot so the keeper really didn’t know anything about his block, then Liam Heseldin who had made up good ground calmly slotted it home. From there on it was just us hammering them. We had a disallowed penalty as it hit the crossbar and came back to Cameron who scored at the second attempt. We then hit the post twice, though the next goal came from a handball that Alistair put away nicely. Jack was subbed with Rob 36mins in, shortly after an unexpected attack by Gildersome earned them a goal. Still Rob managed a driving run in the last min of the half to see his shot come off the post!
The second half started as if we hadn’t had a break, once again we were camped in their penalty box and we had 3 consecutive shots, Jack and Eliot’s were saved and Kallum placed his wide. Though it was only a couple of mins later Liam Dent scored and after a good ball put through by Ash. Another couple of mins and Cameron scored after a nice ball through by Liam Heseldin, but we had to wait for another 4 mins before Jack got beyond their defence and scored after another good ball played in by Liam Heseldin. It was becoming a bit too easy which is where Paddy showed why he is a class keeper; he pulled off a couple of fantastic reaction saves that must have really demoralised Gildersome. Our answer to their riposte was Ash running up the pitch and claiming another assist by playing in Liam Dent yet again for him to finish. 56 Mins in we decided to sub Jack with Callum Dickson who came on as LB with Eliot pushed to wide left. We were still queuing up to score and Cameron was the next player to get a goal after Liam Dent played him in. But Liam Dent was starting to feel his leg injury and asked to come off, he was subbed him with Jack on 65min who went on as CF. It wasn’t long before Paddy earned his first assist with a long well placed kick up the pitch; Jack beat the defence for pace and lifted it over the onrushing keeper. Gildersome did keep pressing when they were up for it and scored a goal in the last stages of the match, though this wasn’t the last goal. Eliot had the last say with a storming run and strike to make it 9 goals to 2. Well done lads ...amazing performance, but we still should have had a couple of hatricks !

1st Half
Learning lessons from last week we made sure the lads were mentally focused from the start, and it paid. Within the first few mins we were parked in their penalty box, and it was Cameron who pounced on a loose ball and hit a good low hook shot into the corner. This is exactly the start we wanted as Joe Nightingale had volunteered to go in net; Paddy the regular keeper was away all weekend. Neal had passed on the message to the defence not to concede corners, due to Joe not being our regular goalkeeper we didn’t want to invite undue pressure. It was becoming quite a battle in the middle of the pitch, the game was quite condensed which does play into our counter attacking strengths; Liam Dent and Alistair Firth were causing problems on the right anytime they broke, though it was another loose ball in the box and Cameron Hawkins yet again found himself in the right place at the right time, and hit another good shot which found its way in. Liam Heseldin did look a bit jaded in midfield so was subbed with Adam Taylor. The first half pretty much was a battle from there on. Adam, Cam and Kallum H were working hard in midfield in restricting Beeston’s game. The few breaks forward they did have, the defence covered, but we still ended up conceding a couple of corners. It was a quick break by Liam Dent that caught them by surprise. He sped into their penalty box and ended up being sandwiched between their CB and the keeper, earning us a penalty. Seeing Cameron was on a brace the team elected he should be given the penalty, and he took the opportunity of a hatrick with aplomb.
2nd Half
The message was put across to get the ball wide so we could create enough space to get our passing game going. Though our next goal came early on in the second half and it was another quick break that earned us a corner; Alistair put in a great ball in for Kallum Hirst to nod home. Due to the competitive nature of the game some niggles were developing between players. But there was great discipline throughout team, and all got their heads down and finished strongly. Still, Beeston can count them self unlucky not to score, with two of their shots hitting the post and a good chance blasted wide and high. With the game starting to get a bit stretched, gaps were appearing in both defences. One of these gaps led to a goal that showed why Liam Dent is so dangerous if given a chance to run at defences. A ball played through from the left which Liam took at pace, he then outstripped two players with the ball at his feet and nonchalantly slotted it past the keeper with the outside of his foot. Soon after Liam was replaced with Cameron Hawkin and Liam Heseldin moved upfront. This move proved to give us food for thought, Liam Heseldin is quite the opposite sort of forward to Liam Dent and Alistair who can always use their pace and movement to destroy defences. He held the ball up brilliantly and the ever running Jack Ambler who had quite combative game till then was suddenly free to attack down the left where he earned us several corners; one from which Liam Heseldin headed brilliantly only to see it rebound off the crossbar. Another positive point about this game is that Joe Nightingale only had one save to make. Even though Beeston should have scored, we still kept a clean sheet. Which is a credit to the whole team, and the defence Joe, Ash, Brad, Eliot and Rob who were vigilant and tried to play football from the back; also great communication from Ash and Kallum throughout the match. Overall good stuff but now we need to build on it...

1st Half
After a 40 min drive we turned up at Wheldrake for an earlier than usual kickoff at 10am. With Paddy not available this weekend, Liam Dent volunteered to go in net, where he proved to do an admiral job. Our strength and competitiveness throughout the match allowed us to retain possession of the ball, though we simply didn’t really use it well enough. Though early on Liam Heseldin played some nice passes through for Alistair; one of which eventually lead to a penalty, which Alistair tucked away. Their keeper did get a hand to it, but his efforts only earned him an injury which forced him to leave the game. It was a decent battle that we were just edging, though our first touch was letting us down again, and cost us numerous opportunities. Joe Nightingale had worked hard and looked like he would benefit from a breather, so was subbed with Jack Ambler, and we pretty much dominated till the end of the half. Wheldrake did have a few forays forward that Liam Dent calmly dealt with, though he still had to make a good save down to his near post at the end of the half.
2nd Half
We were caught cold at the start of the second half and some missed challenges that allowed their striker through on goal, and he took his chance well. (41 Min) Our heads didn’t drop and the team responded well, putting Wheldrake under decent pressure. Unfortunately Michael Houghton took quite a whack to his face while bravely defending and was replaced by Joe Nightingale. Tom Chant moved to CB and Joe to DM. Then 5 mins later Jack Ambler complained about a tight calf muscle and signalled to come off; he’d won us a few free kicks and one of the knocks had taken effect so Callum Dickson re entered the fray. We moved Rob into CM position and Cal came on as RB. So with both subs injured and one player carrying an injury, things was starting to look a little tough. Rob Crebbin was chosen to be captain today and did try to communicate and organise the team, though Ash’s efforts were exemplary in this role. We eventually struck half way through the second half with a good ball by Alistair, who turned and laid it off in one fluid motion. Matty Longmire burst forward and took a couple of touches before blasting it past their keeper. Not much later the pressure was starting to show again and Liam Heseldin had a chance to measure a shot that their keeper should have done better with; he ended up just palming it into his own net. Callum Dickson was feeling his injury and Michael was looking like he was able to come back on, so the substitution was made. Another burst forward by Alistair followed by a great shot that seemed a certain goal as it raced to the top corner. But some frankly unbelievable defending by their No3 cleared the ball off the line with I guess had to be described as a jumping knee strike! Another attack by us and Rob was scythed down which earned us a free kick. Rob did get caught quite nastily from behind and had to be subbed with Callum Dickson; which was admirable in its own right as Callum was already playing on with an injury. Right at the end we did some decent passing and Andy Wort engineered an opening which Alistair slotted home at the second attempt.
