Under 12 Girls Season 2007/2008

The merger of the under 12 and under 11 age groups enables Rangers to field it’s first girls 11-a-side team. The under 11 girls had a strong second half to last season and will not be out of place in this squad, while the under 12s have consistently performed well over the last 3 seasons despite losing players to Leeds United.

Manager – Phillip Grimbley will be this season’s manager.

Coaches – Dave Chambers and Stephen Shippey (pre-season).

Chaperone – Angela Adams and Cath Meek.  Angela and Cath both have a daughter in this age group.

Fixtures & Results - West Riding Girls League, Division One 2007/8

Garforth Rangers finish 5th in the West Riding Girls League under-12 11-a-side Division One

May 3rd Brighouse 4 v 1 Garforth Rangers (West Riding Shield Final)

Playing on the large Ossett Town pitch in front of a large crowd, Rangers were unlucky not to go in front on a number of occasions. Good defending by Sophie and Lil in the early exchanges helped settle any cup final nerves. After 4 minutes a goalkick found its way to Emma who released Charlie with a clear run on goal for an early chance, but the offside flag halted that attempt.  A throw in by Sophie then released Ellie on a strong run down the left and Brighouse defended well to concede a corner. Rangers continued to attack and Ellie again broke clear forcing the keeper into a good save for another corner. Another 3 corners followed before Rangers had to defend, and Sophie P made an important tackle. But Rangers came back again with Ellie storming through the middle after 8 minutes and unluckily hitting the post with an unstoppable shot, Lil just missing the same post when firing in the rebound.

A good run from Charlie resulted in a strong cross that was cleared for a corner. Another attack from Brighouse ended when Sophie P cleared the danger for a corner and once again Chalkie marshalled her defence well to prevent any scoring chances. With Holly and Jade holding their positions at fullback, and Kasey and Amy running their socks off in midfield all the girls were doing well.  Ellie once again almost opened the scoring after 20 minutes with another strong run and shot, but again the keeper was in the right place at the right time. Almost against the run of play it was Brighouse who took the lead on 24 minutes when Rangers were unable to clear a goalkick and a looping shot found the net. Lil had to hobble off with a tweaked knee and Melissa came into midfield. Both teams battled hard in the sunshine and just as it looked like Rangers had regained the upper hand a breakaway goal made it 2-0.

In the second half Lil came back onto the pitch on goal, and Rangers attacked straight away with unlucky Ellie seeing a great chip turned away for a corner.  Brighouse extended their lead when a corner was sliced into the air at just the right height to be headed into the net. Natasha Rhoni and Jessica came of for Holly, Jade and Kasey as all the girls got a taste of cup final action. Sophie pushed up into midfield as players began to tire and a pass to Ellie saw another shot turned away for a corner. Back at the Rangers end another goal kick couldn’t be cleared and Brighouse scored a fourth before Ellie and Emma both had shots that went close. Ellie’s perseverance was finally rewarded though with a good goal in the 58th minute.  With a little more luck Rangers would have been a lot closer and may even have won, but congratulations to Brighouse and all the girls from both teams who played in an excellent match today.  You all deserved your trophies.

Team: Chalkie; Holly, Sophie G, Sophie P, Jade; Kasey, Lil, Amy, Charlie; Emma (captain), Ellie; Melissa, Natasha, Rhoni, Jessica.
