Garforth Rangers         : 0

Wrgfl Sunday 28th April

On a terrible Sunday morning with the rain lashing down and a muddy pitch to play on the girls were determined to try and win this game as we had a chance to finish second in the league but they came up against a Saints side who were full of confidence and were scoring goals for fun. Yet the girls were fantastic in defence and the home team did not even get a shot on goal in the first half .With just a couple of minutes to half time after a scrappy move when Saints could not get the ball away It fell to Jenna who unleashed an unstoppable shot which hit the post and ran across the goalmouth and cleared.

At the break I told the girls to keep moving the ball and passing to each other and they would get a chance. In the second half the girls dominance was fantastic to watch and after numerous corners won and many chances to score not taken it was going to be one of them days.

Just to emphasise this Niamh and Charli broke free and with some good passing between each other it fell to Charli who shot and just as I had begun to celebrate the win the keeper lost control but the ball went the wrong side of the post. All in all it was a fantastic match to watch in terrible conditions which was testament to both teams to how well they both played.

The girls knew we had lost the chance to finish second as norristhorpe won their last two games but we only need a draw in our last game at home against Hebden bridge to confirm 3rd place which is a fantastic achievement for this mixed under 9 and under 10 team.

Wigton Moor           : 6

WRGFL

Saturday 19th April

After climbing up the table to second and giving wigton a good game in the semi-final of the cup I was sure the girls would put up a good display in this league game. And even though I thought we played very well the ball did not run our way and with wigton gaining more confidence they finished ruthlessly and showed us what a good side they are. Although with a bit more luck with rangers finishing we could have had 3 or 4 goals and given them a better game.

The good news was that results went our way again and if we can win the last 2 games against Hebden Bridge we will secure runners up spot which would be a fantastic result for the girls and bodes well for the future.

WRGFL Monday 14th April

After the weekend game was cancelled we arranged with Farsley to play on Monday night at 6.30 but after hitting all the rush hour traffic and getting lost again we did not arrive until 6.40 pm. The first half was very uneventful as a very much improved farsley side defended very well and rangers rode their luck in front of goal.

After a very honest half time talk where all the girls said they did not play very well we got the second half under way in a more positive way and started to pepper the farsley goal. We were missing Molly upfront due to her not being available but charli and Niamh were suddenly finding their footing and forced a corner. Yet again Jenna whipped in a fast corner and who was their to hit the ball in , Charli but she did it again via her bottom which is not the only time that’s happened this season.

Rangers did not play very well but we still managed to come away with the points and that is usually a good sign of how Rangers have improved this season.

Sunday 6th April

Having not had a game for 3 weeks the girls were a bit rusty and it was a very tight 1st half. The pitch was on a slight incline so I told Casey who was captain for the day if we won the toss to kick uphill first and that’s what she did. Garforth defended very well with Demi and Sophie, Casey and Jenna backing up from midfield. But 0-0 it stayed. Kicking downhill now and Garforth took the iniative and took the lead through some good passing from Sophie in defence right through to Molly who made it 1-0.

Just when I thought that we would again take the iniative and control the game Lauren put her hands up to her face to stop the ball hitting her but the ref gave a penalty much to the amusement of myself and all the parents who had turned up to watch.

Fortunately for Rangers we have a goalkeeper who always manages to get her hand to the ball and when she knocked it on to the post it came back to another Kirkburton player but Alice saved it again and it was cleared away.

This was a very tough game but I think we just edged it and I am sure kirkburton will go onto bigger and better things next year and we wish them well in the league cup final against Wigton moor. If results went our way this weekend we could find ourselves in 2nd place again with just 4 matches remaining.

Wigton Moor        : 1

Garforth Rangers : 0

Saturday 15th March wrgfl league cup semi-final

Just to let everybody know the size of the task that faced Rangers this week, Wigton had not been beaten all season and were sitting proudly on top of the division and we had been beaten 4-0 earlier in the season by them when all the girls froze.

All the girls were determined to show that we were ready to put on a good performance and could match this Wigton side who were full of confidence. From Alice in goal to Molly in attack every girl played their hearts out.

In the first half we defended astutely and when all the girls came off at half-time Wigton knew they were in a game. When the second half started Wigton started strongly and peppered our goal but Alice in goal, Demi and Casey with Sophie stopped every shot and jenna and Lauren ,Alex and Megan fought in midfield to make sure Wigton did not get the room to control the game. Molly and Charli with Niamh in attack did not get a sniff of the wigton goal because of the size of their defenders who were nearly as tall as myself.

Then with 2 minutes to go one of the Wigton players took a shot outside of the area and Lauren got her foot to the shot but it ballooned up and agonisingly went over everybody in to the top of the net.

I was nearly speechless but not quite and when the whistle went all of the Wigton players showed total respect with their parents to say that was one of the best games they had seen all season.

I don’t think I am speaking out of order when I say this should have been the final and I don’t think anybody will give Wigton a harder game this season

Just to finish I would like to say all the work the girls and myself put in at training and all the paperwork really pays of when you see the girls play like they did today and not one girl came off upset because they knew they had played to the best of their ability.

Well done girls.

Doncaster Rover Belles : 1

Saturday 8th March

We had not been beaten all year and had moved up to third in the league and hopes were high that we could move up to second with a win against Doncaster. We had beaten them 4-1 earlier in the season at their ground but things seemed to conspire against us before we had even kicked a ball. Alice our 1st choice keeper was away and Molly was away at crufts, then Charli turned up poorly and Jenna had been off colour all week plus Sophie had just come back from Australia and was still jetlagged, and all in all we knew it was going to be a tough game .

Doncaster had a few different players who seemed like giants in defence and they played very well in the first half going 1-0 up with a very well taken goal from outside the area when volunteer goalie Lauren could only get her fingertips to it.

In the second half rangers played very well we had Jenna in goal and everybody played their hearts out from demi, Sophie in defence and Lauren , Alex , megan and casey in midfield supplying as many chances to Niamh, charli and debutant Ellie, but after about 4 to 5 chances we knew it was not going to be our day. Doncaster deserved their win but fortunately everybody around us did not manage a win either so we stayed third with still a chance to finish second.

Saturday 1st March Wrgfl

On a very wet, windy and cold Saturday morning the girls put on a good show of character and togetherness to beat an improved Battyeford side who we had beaten 4-0 earlier in the season . It was tough going on a very heavy pitch and after Battyeford had most of the play we managed to score two goals via Molly . Alice made a good save to make sure we went in 2-0 at half-time.

The girls then stepped up a gear and started to play a lot better with good passing . Demi was in defence with Casey and Megan helping out but when all three defenders missed the ball that was kicked from Battyefords keeper one of their players ran on to ball and shot it past Alice to make it 2-1.

Then with good character the girls in midfield Jenna and Lauren and niamh backing up all put together some good passes to the forwards Charli and molly and the ball ran to charli who shot passed their keeper to make it 3-1 and win the game for Garforth

For the first time this season the girls spirit and determination actually got what they deserved by climbing up the table to 2nd spot. I hope they all continue to be so enthuastic about training and the league games where I am sure they will consolidate 2nd position at the end of the season.

    Mapplewell Mavericks   : 2

Saturday 23rd February

west riding girls league cup Quarter final

We had played Mapplewell 2 weeks earlier in the league and we managed to beat them 5-3 but we had a couple of players missing for this match including Alice our main goalkeeper but we had a capable stand in with charli in the first half and megan volunteering for the second half .

The match started pretty slowly at first with both teams cancelling each other out, and in defence Demi and Casey tackling everything with Lauren and Jenna playing in midfield with the back up of Megan and alex , Garforth were looking quite a solid team especially in attack with molly and niamh we were getting closer to scoring a goal. Jenna took a corner after some good work involving molly and Niamh and yet again as in previous weeks it was too hot for the keeper to hold and up went all the Garforth players arms in celebration.

We were at this time in total control of the game and with total backup of a good size crowd continued to threaten the mapps defence. In the second half mapplewell came out all attacking but we managed to hold on and Niamh ran on to another ball and made it 2-0 and just when we all thought it was going to be a walkover Mapplewell scored a good goal with a breakaway to get us all panicking and we had a game on.

With about ten minutes left, after some good work from Lauren, Jenna latched on to a ball in the centre of Mapplwell's half and smacked it into the left hand corner which the Mapplwell keeper could only get a fingertip to (3-1).

Yet again Mapplwell came back and made it 3-2 with a well taken goal and it was game on again , but this time garforth were more determined and saw the semi-final ahead and after good work from Molly and Charlie the ball was crossed and Lauren was there to tap it home.

A fantastic result for all the girls and I hope we get a good draw for the semi-final at home but in this form I would bet on the girls beating anybody at the moment.

 Norristhorpe Bees  : 1

Garforth Rangers    : 2

Sunday 17th February WRGFL

This was another game which we lost at the beginning of the season 2-1 and we were looking forward to see how far we were progressing .

The game was set for Sunday at 2.00pm when we all should have been eating our Sunday roast or having a midday kip but the girls looked very determined to put the record straight and show them what we were capable of.

The pitch was very steep and I had asked Alice who was captain for the day to turn us round and kick uphill first half if we won the toss. And that’s what we did which turned out to be crucial. All the girls defended doggedly while they peppered alice in goal but everybody stood up very well and tackled everything in sight.

Then when they was only 3 minutes to go to half-time we managed to gain a corner and when Jenna whipped it in the goalie could only parry the ball into the back of the net, 1-0 at half time or so we thought when just as the ref was about to blow the whistle we could not clear a ball on the left and one of the Norristhorpe players took a very speculative shot and it flew into the top right hand corner of Alices net.

Half-time and Alice came of crying such was the intensity of the game. After we explained to Alice it was not her fault and it was a good result to be drawing at half-time all the girls came back flying in the second half. We should have had about 5 to 6 goals but we only managed to score one via Molly and I have never heard such cheering from all the relatives who had come to watch. We managed to hold on as all the girls were tiring and we took all three points .

At this stage of the season we were still in 4th position but 1 point behind norristhorpe in third and 3 points behind Altofts in 2nd but we still have a game in hand and the next few games will dictate where we finish in the league.

Garforth Rangers        : 5

Mapplewell Mavericks : 3

Saturday 9th February WRGFL

Having lost 3-1 to mapplewell in the 2nd game of the season in September we all knew the we were in for a tough game and it became more important as we were due to play them again in 2 weeks in q/f of league cup.

Rangers started very well and in the third minute Molly scored a good goal and after further pressing went 2-0 up again through Molly. Mapplewell managed to score a goal near the end of the 1st half to set up a another exciting 2nd half.

Then just as the whistle went mapplewell went straight up and scored a 2nd goal to make it 2-2 and were in total control for the next five minutes. Alice made a wonderful save with one hand and the two defenders Demi and Casey held tight with good backing up from Lauren and Jenna in midfield , Alex and Niamh came on as subs and helped garforth to stay firm in all positions, meanwhile Molly and charli started to get an upper hand up front when two good passes from midfield set Molly up to make it 3-2 and after good attacking play we forced 3-4 corners in succession.

Jenna took all corners and when the 4th corner was pumped in so fast it hit Charli and went flying past the goalkeeper to make it

4-2.

One of the Mapplewell midfield players hit a rasping shot from all of 30 yards and Alice could do nothing about it to make it 4-3 .Who”d be a manager ?

When we all thought it was going to go to the wire molly broke free again and scored her 4th goal and Rangers 5th goal to make the game safe .

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL THE TEAM AND ALL CONCERNED .

Saturday 12th January WRGFL

All I can say is wow what a game ,Altofts had beaten us 4-1 earlier in year and stood 2nd in the division and we knew we were in for a hard game and so it proved to be in the first half. We were very slow starting and we were second to every ball and when they scored in the first half it was no more than they deserved. Unfortunately Altofts lost one of their girls due to one of her own players hitting the ball so hard it actually burst her nose and she had to go off.

From then on it was one way traffic when Molly scored and then Niamh scored and then Molly scored a third to close the game up. But I could only watch in marvel with all the other parents as the girls played so well we could have scored 10. It was so pleasing to see the girls score these goals but more satisfying with the way they actually scored them ,by actually passing the ball to each other and dare I say it, it was like watching Brasil .

WELL DONE GIRLS .

  Wigton Moor         : 4

 Garforth Rangers : 0

Sunday 1st december WRGFL

Having won three in a row hopes were high that we could give league leaders and unbeaten Wigton moor a good run for their money but it wasn’t to be. Having arrived their in plenty of time I was disappointed to see that the pitch was very boggy and slippery but we gave a good account of ourselves . this team had been beating teams by very big scores and we gave them too much respect but it was only 2-0 at half time .

The girls played even better in the second half in very bad conditions and I thought Lauren and Niamh played particular well with some very good tackling from midfield and defense respectively , we lost 4-0 but all credit to the girls for their never say die spirit and made me feel very humble.

Saturday 24th November  WRGFL

Well having won the last 2 matches I was hoping we could carry that form into this next game against Farsley and I wasn’t disappointed. We started very well and was 2-0 up very quickly going into half-time. After a slow start at the beginning of the second half we stepped up a gear and managed to finish strongly winning 4-0 but should have been about 7 or 8 . Goals came from Molly 1 and Charli with 3. Well done girls and well done Charli , great hat-trick.

Saturday 10th November WRGFL

After a good win last week at home we travelled to Doncaster , hoping for another win to see us climb up the league table. If certain results went the right way for us we would move up to 4th place ,and that’s exactly what we did .

Charli and Megan yet again volunteered to go in goals which hopefully would be the last game and Alice would be back for our next game at home .

I think I was starting to get a little excited by the prospect of moving up the table as we arrived in Doncaster about 1 hour before kick off and I don’t think the wait did the girls any good as we started the game very slowly and almost at snails pace .

With an over zealous referee regarding every throw in (although he was very good in other decisions) we started to play a little bit better .Molly yet again scored an early goal and Jenna seemed to walk the ball into the net for the second goal although myself and all parents seemed to shout shoot just at the right time as she blasted it in .

In the second half we were kicking uphill and Doncaster started a lot quicker than ourselves and we started playing on the counter attack. We were beginning to pass the ball so much better in midfield consisting of Niamh ,Alex and Sophie with Casey, Jenna and Lauren in defense we were starting to look confident on the ball and with one swift attack consisting of numerous passes the ball made its way to charli who swiftly put the ball in the back of the net to make it 3-0 . Then Doncaster scored straight away to make it 3-1 to make us think again about our marking and coming back to defend . Then just before the end we got another counter attack and after some more good passing between all the girls Charli yet again managed to get the ball and after passing a few Doncaster players placed the ball in the net to make it 4-1 and effectively the game was over . Well done to all the girls as the team spirit is starting to get very strong even when we don’t play to our full potential but I know the girls can only get better as the season goes on .

The new girls who have recently joined the team have settled in very well and they are a credit to all parents.

 Battyeford              : 0

Saturday 3rd November WRGFL

After a long lay off of three weeks and a lot of hard training we got back to the league programme against battyeford girls.

Yet again we still had no 1st choice keeper and Charli decided to volunteer for the first half with Megan going in goals in the 2nd half .

Yet again Molly scored first at the beginning of the first half which seems to be the norm as in other matches this season , but then Battyeford were awarded a penalty for a blatant hand ball in the area . We all feared the worse but Charli made a good save and we survived the scare .

Then Jenna got her foot on the ball after some good work in midfield from Alex and made it 2-0 .

Into the second half and Rangers stepped up a gear and really started to pass the ball about to each other as we have been trying to do in training .While Megan in goals seem to lead a charmed life which put a smile on her mams face as well as all other parents and myself, Jenna marched up the other half and unleashed an unstoppable volley into the top of the net which Battyefords keeper could do nothing about. Then the girl of the match Charli who had earlier saved a penalty managed to get hold of the ball and sneak it in under the keeper to make it 4-0 and the game was wrapped up .

All the girls did very well and are improving with every game . so I decided to start a new award for the girl who had most impressed me the most by improving their play and never say die spirit. That award went to Alex Shaw who tackled constantly throughout the game and never complained once .Well done Alex and keep up the good work.

Saturday 13th October WRGFL

Unfortunately myself and Jenna could not make this game due to birthday arrangements but thankfully we had a very capable stand in being Lauren’s dad Carl Marshall. Thank you very much for that Carl .

With not being there I couldn’t write a match report but as far as I know we were 1-0 up at half time even though we still did not have a 1st choice keeper .But we fell apart in the second half through no fault of any of the team and I think Demi deserved a very special mention for volunteering to go in goal .

Molly managed to score another goal in the first half and from what I understand everybody played their hearts out. This fixture will be a very different story when they come to east garforth for return leg.

Saturday 6th October WRGFL

Garforth started this game without our 1st choice keeper Alice Horgan due to her breaking her collarbone in a freak accident at school (or was it rolling down a hill Alice) .

Anyway we had two volunteer goalies in Lauren and Jenna (well done girls) and this made the match a very evenly contested match. While Lauren was in goal in the 1st half the girls gritted their teeth and we went in front with a very well taken goal by Jenna.

Norristhorpe pulled one back before half time and it stayed like that until half time.

In the second half we were clearly missing key players in key positions but we did not concede until 3 minutes before the end and we just couldn’t get back into the game before the final whistle. The effort that the girls were putting in was extremely humbling to all the parents and myself and clearly did not deserve to lose this game, but we still have to travel to their ground which I think the girls will want to return the favour especially as Alice should be back by then .

 Mapplewell Mavericks : 3

 Garforth Rangers          : 1

Sunday 23rd September WRGFL

This was our first away game of the season and what a nailbiter it turned out to be. This was one of the furthest distances we would have to travel this season (BARNSLEY) and after I managed to get everybody lost with my Satnav, a good Samaritan who I asked directions said he would get in his car and take us down to the pitches ( good Yorkshire hospitality).

Anyway back to the game , and straight away from kick-off molly managed to latch onto an early ball and gave us an early 1-0 lead. Mapplewell notched up a gear and with the pitch being one of the biggest we had seen , the girls started to get tired very quickly and as we only had one sub we found the going very tough. After about fifteen minutes Mapplewell managed to equalize to make it 1-1. The score stood at 1-1 until half –time, when in the second half we dug really deep and the girls withstood everything Mapplewell could throw at us right up until the last five minutes when they managed to score two goals on the break while we were trying to snatch a winner.

Every girl played their hearts out and were so tired at the end that we didn’t have to say anything apart from well done girls.

Garforth Rangers : 3

 Kirkburton          : 2

Saturday 15th September

This was the first game for a relatively new side in division 1 of the west riding girls football league. The girls got off to a slow start but after great encouragement from all parents they started to pass the ball a lot better and made good progress.

It was a very evenly contested match as this was also Kirkburtons first league match.Sophie and Jenna played well in defence but we went 1-0 down after we failed to clear the ball. This seemed to make the girls play even better and after good work in midfield from Lauren, Alex and Demi, Molly gathered the ball and made it 1-1.

In the second half we played much better football and after good work again  upfront with Charli and Molly putting pressure on we managed to gain a corner. Jenna took the corner and unfortunately for Kirkburton their goalkeeper couldn’t hold the ball and it bounced into the back of the net. Then after good work again Molly took the ball and when everybody thought she’d gone too wide she clipped the ball into the back of the net. Kirkburton scored again with a few minutes left but Rangers managed to hold on for a very dramatic win.

I decided that all the girls played so well that the whole team got the man of the match award.

Well done girls.
