Selby & District League

The team are currently sponsored by Brackenbury Clark Ltd

The team playing in the Selby and District league are now currently in their fourth season with many of the players being with the team from it’s formation in the 2006/2007 season when Garforth Rangers welcomed the introduction of open age football into the club. Managed and coached by Ian Ingle, Graham Harding and Michael Bacon, the team play in the Selby and District Football League Division 1. The Squad is made up of players from Garforth & surrounding areas, playing their home games at Allerton Bywater on Saturday afternoon. The players have signed up to pay self imposed fines based around discipline of the team (ie dirty boots and being late). These fines are donated to cancer research at the end of each season. Whilst we try not to fall short of the rules, it is for a good cause and the total for the last two seasons has been £75.00.

History

In the season 2006/2007 Garforth Rangers launched its first open age side playing in the Selby and District League. The first season saw the small squad grow in stature and confidence ending the season on high finishing in 7th position in the league. The second season saw the squad playing a higher standard of football with excellent results which resulted in the team attaining fourth position in the league. The team were denied promotion due to unforeseen circumstances and were therefore determined that in season 2008/2009 nothing was going to stand in their way.

They started the season brightly and always had their sights set on the number two spot when it became evident that Ferrybridge were always going to be the league leaders. As well as an excellent league run, the team were successful in reaching the Barkston Ash Active8 cup final, beating several West Yorkshire league teams in their run up to the final. The team started the final in true professional style with a pre-match breakfast at our host pub “the boat” at Allerton Bywater. The players then travelled by coach to Tadcaster Albion's ground to meet their opponents Sherburn White Rose. Whilst Rangers gave a good account of themselves, injuries and the toll of playing three league matches a week in the preceding few weeks seemed to catch up with them and they were unable to beat the strong Sherburn White Rose side. The team were disappointed not to come away with Silverware but should be proud of the achievements in such a short period of time in that they gained promotion to division one of the Selby and District League and finalists of the Barkston Ash cup.
Season 2009/2010 saw the team embark on their biggest challenge yet in Division 1 of the Selby and District league. The team didn't have the best start to the season having suffered injuries to key players, which has meant that the team were been unable to field a settled side. However team spirit is still good within the camp and it looks as though the side will end the season in a respectable 8th place. Not quite as high as they would have liked, but they have made a good impact on all teams they have met throughout the season, with their determination, spirit and excellent disciplinary record and are looking forward to the challenge of next season. A couple of the players in this squad have been part of Garforth Rangers since it’s formation in 1996 and several have come through the ranks as junior team members. New members are always made welcome and training sessions are open to anyone wishing to gain an insight into open age football.

Match Reports

Garforth Rangers : 4

Magnet Hotel      : 2

24/04/2010 S&DFL Div 1

This was an important must win match for Rangers as success would propel them into 8thposition in the league and ensure they ended the season on a positive note in preparation for next season.
The team took to the field with an air of nervousness, which soon disappeared once the game got underway and Rangers saw that they were able to dominate from the outset. Dale Swatman, Chris Reynolds and Phil Clark all saw shots narrowly miss the target and their constant attack on goal was rewarded when a penalty was awarded for a player being brought down in the area. Gavin O’Laughlin stepped up to the challenge and coolly fired home for the first goal of the match. Excellent play from the midfield of Phil Clark, Anthony Fisher, Rich Wilson and Gavin O’Laughlin ensured plenty of service for the forwards and Phil Clark and Chris Reynolds both scored before half time to make the score 3-0 at the break.
Magnet came back fighting in the second half and excellent defensive work from Adam Mortimer, Mark Cranston, Steve Blair and Nathan Turner meant that Magnet struggled to get that all important goal until the last 20 minutes when tired legs allowed Magnet to score 2 goals in quick succession.  Rangers were determined to see this one through to the end and keeper Tom Dobson was required to make some all important saves to keep Magnet at bay. The game was sealed was Chris Reynolds and Phil Clark made headway into the Magnet area and an excellent pass from Chris allowed Phil to coolly pass the ball past the keeper.
Rangers showed their true determination and commitment to this match and should be congratulated on their excellent end to the season.
